Step into a CIO's shoes: "A Day in the Life" program develops tomorrow's tech leaders

What does it actually take to lead technology at one of the world's largest financial institutions? At RBC, we don't just tell you, we show you.

"A Day in the Life of a CIO" is a hands-on development program inside Global Functions Technology (GFT) that puts technologists directly into the decision-making seat of senior technology leadership, where strategy, risk, and innovation meet in real time.

At RBC, CIO Navigators are the strategic link between business and technology. Think of them as the people who make sure a major technology investment actually solves a real business problem — translating enterprise priorities into technology roadmaps while championing business needs inside the tech organization. This program is designed to prepare the next generation of leaders for exactly these complex, high-stakes roles.

What makes this program different

Participants spend a morning hearing directly from senior GFT leaders — candid conversations about real trade-offs, competing priorities and pressures that define enterprise technology leadership a this scale. In the afternoon, they step into capital allocation discussions and incident response activities, playing the role of CIO
Navigator firsthand.

To date, nearly 400 technologists from Toronto, Vancouver and Halifax have taken
part, a cross-section of GFT's next generation of leaders, sitting one to two steps
from director level.
"This experience has proven instrumental in broadening my professional perspective and deepening my appreciation for the complexity of senior management roles." – Program participant

"The real-world examples made all the difference. It conveys a better feeling that… leadership actually does want to nurture us into these roles." – Program participant

Clear impact on career development

After every session, participants are surveyed anonymously. The results speak for themselves: 99 per cent rated the program excellent or good and 86 per cent gained
deeper insight into enterprise-level decision-making. Participants walk away with
a tangible understanding of how technology connects to business value, risk
management and strategic priorities, plus direct exposure to the financial and
operational realities of running a large technology organization.

"We designed this program because the leaders we need tomorrow
have to understand enterprise complexity today. If you're the kind
of technologist who's curious about strategy, trade-offs and business impact, we're investing in your development." — Chris Phillips, Senior Vice President, Global Functions Technology
